HC Deb 22 October 1984 vol 65 c439W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will provide a list of all countries known to him which retain the death penalty for terrorist offences which may, or may not, result in death.

Mr. Mellor

Many countries retain the death penalty for all forms of murder, and many also do so for forms of treason or crimes against the integrity of the state. The following list, based mainly on information published in 1979 and 1980, includes those countries which are understood to retain capital punishment for terrorist offences defined as such:

  • Czechoslovakia
  • German Democratic Republic
  • Greece Hungary Israel
  • Jordan
  • Libya
  • Namibia
  • South Africa
  • Syria
  • USSR
  • Yemen (People's Democratic Republic)
  • Zimbabwe
