HC Deb 22 October 1984 vol 65 cc416-7W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is his latest estimate of the number of fishermen who earn their living, wholly or in part, from salmon netting in the estuaries and tidal waters of the rivers Wye and Severn.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

The Welsh water authority operates a private fishery in the Wye estuary and part of the Bristol channel and employs three full-time and six part-time fishermen to fish these waters on its behalf. The best available guide to the number of fishermen who earn their living by salmon netting in the Severn estuary and tidal waters is prodvided by the number of licences issued by the Severn-Trent water authority. It has issued in the 1984 season 13 draft net licences, 46 full season lave net licences, and 39 half season lave net licences. The 13 draft net licences have 52 endorsees who are able to use the nets in the licencees' absence.
