HC Deb 22 October 1984 vol 65 cc498-9W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations he has received from water authorities in England and Wales since the publication of the National Water Council's report "Salmon Conservation — a new approach" concerning legislation to control the sale of salmon; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. MacGregor

The chairman of the Water Authorities Association wrote to me in June this year about the report of the salmon sales group of the National Water Council and reaffirmed the industry's commitment to a sales control scheme of the kind described in the report. Representatives of the water authorities are playing an active part in the examination of the implications of such a scheme which I announced on 29 February in reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Dumfries (Sir H. Monro) at column 196. We are pursuing this examination as quickly as possible with all the interests concerned, and any decision on legislation must await the outcome of that examination.
