asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will take steps to obtain information on the number of fatalities that occur on unlit parts of motorways in England on the same basis as those collected in Scotland.

Information is already obtained on the same basis throughout Great Britain, and it is possible to identify the number of fatalities at unlit sites for each motorway. On the assumption that my hon. Friend is concerned with accidents in the hours of darkness only, the appropriate figures will be extracted for each English motorway in 1983 and I shall write to him shortly.
