HC Deb 22 October 1984 vol 65 cc445-6W
Dr. Glyn

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement on policy concerning insurance intermediaries other than life and pension brokers following the publication of the Gower report on investor protection.

Mr. Alex Fletcher

On insurance, the thrust of Professor Gower's report on investor protection (Cmnd. 9125) is on the marketing of life insurance and related investment products. For non-life insurance I look to the insurance companies to enforce—and where appropriate improve upon—the standards set out in the industry's self-regulatory code of practice for the selling of insurance by non-broker intermediaries. Many insurance intermediaries are registered as brokers with the Insurance Brokers Registration Council. Others who are eligible may wish to consider registration, as the disciplines inherent in it should help to raise professional standards.
