Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the date of appointment of each of the full and part-time immigration appeal adjudicators.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if there is a fixed length of service or retirement age for immigration appeal adjudicators.

Mr. Waddington

[pursuant to his reply, 1 August 1984]: Full-time adjudicators below age 55 are normally appointed for 10 years in the first instance and thereafter may have their appointment extended by further periods of up to 10 years to age 65.

Full-time adjudicators above age 55 are normally appointed to age 65 in the first instance.

Further extensions are possible up to the normal retirement age of 70 and occasionally to the maximum of age 72.

Part-time adjudicators are appointed on one-year terms which are renewable by agreement.

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he next expects to make appointments of full-time or part-time immigration appeal adjudicators.

Mr. Waddington

[pursuant to his reply, 1 August 1984]: My right hon. and learned Friend has no plans at present to make further appointments as adjudicators but the need to do so is kept under review in consultation with the chief adjudicator.

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what countries each immigration appeal adjudicator has visited since being appointed.

[pursuant to his reply, 1 August 1984]: Adjudicators currently serving have made official visits since their appointment as follows:

  • 3 to Bangladesh, Pakistan and India.
  • 2 to Sri Lanka.
  • 1 to Barbados, St. Vincent, Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad.
  • 1 to Zimbabwe.
