HC Deb 22 October 1984 vol 65 c460W
Rev. William McCrea

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the present estimated cost for the completion of the Belfast city hospital tower block; and what were the original costings.

Mr. Chris Patten

The total estimated cost is £69.72 million (at June 1984), and the original contract sum was £6.97 million at 1970 prices. The total estimated cost includes the cost of additional work to provide accommodation for undergraduate teaching for the Queen's university of Belfast, external works, post-contract alterations, remedial works, fees and equipment.

Rev. William McCrea

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will establish an inquiry to examine the Belfast city hospital tower block project.

Mr. Chris Patten

No. The Committee of Public Accounts carried out an examination in 1981 and I am not aware of any grounds which would justify the establishment of a further inquiry.
