HC Deb 28 November 1984 vol 68 c481W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the policy of his Department towards the setting up of representative student councils in schools and colleges; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

Provision is normally made in the articles of government of public sector institutions of further and higher education for the establishment of a students' union, one of whose functions will be to represent the views of students in discussion with institutional authorities. Whether to set up a school council is best left to individual schools to decide in the light of their own needs and circumstances.
