HC Deb 28 November 1984 vol 68 c476W
Mr. Willie W. Hamilton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has had from the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society against the imposition of value added tax on newspapers and magazines; and what was the nature of his reply.

Mr. Hayhoe

I have noted press reports about representations on this subject being made by the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society but they have not yet reached me. When they do I will reiterate that although the Government are committed to a shift in the burden of taxation from taxes on earnings to taxes on spending, we have no set views at present on how this might best be done.
