asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many people have been accepted as being homeless so far in the current calendar year; and how this figure compares with 1978.

The number of households accepted by local authorities as homeless in the first half of 1984 was 41,400 compared with 26,500 in the first half of 1978. It is estimated that about a quarter of this increase was associated with changes in statistical procedures.
