HC Deb 28 November 1984 vol 68 cc482-5W
Mr. Sean Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will provide figures showing spending on books alone by each local education authority in England and Wales (a) in terms of their overall allocation and spending per pupil and (b) in cost and real terms using 1979–80 as the base year for each of the last five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Dunn

[pursuant to his reply, 26 November 1984, c. 353]: Figures are not readily available to prepare a complete answer in the form requested for the five-year period in question, but within the time available it has been possible to calculate the following data:

Local education authority expenditure per pupil on the provision of books in primary and secondary schools—England (1982–83 prices)
