HC Deb 27 November 1984 vol 68 c471W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what were the total numbers of people in the United Kingdom in receipt of (a) retirement pension only, (b) supplementary pension only, (c) retirement pension and supplementary pension, (d) all public sector pension schemes and (e) retirement pension and a public sector pension, in 1983.

Mr. Whitney

The available information is as follows:

1983
Thousands
Retirement Pension only (a) 7,773
Supplementary Pension only (b) 90
Retirement Pension and Supplementary Pension (c) 1,604
Public Sector Pensions (d) 2,320

Sources:

  1. (a) Social security statistics September/November 1983.
  2. (b)-(c) Social security statistics December 1983.
  3. (d) The Government Acturary's Survey of Occupational Schemes: 1979 (HMSO)—latest available estimates.

Note:

The Government Actuary's Survey of Occupational Pension Schemes is published quadrenially and figures from the 1983 survey are due to be published shortly. Whilst no estimates are available of the number of public sector occupational pensioners who also have a state retirement pension it is likely that almost all people over pension age who have a public sector occupational pension will also have a state retirement pension.
