Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Defence when the signals log of HMS Conqueror during the Falklands campaign was destroyed; on whose authority; and at what level the decision was taken.

Mr. Stanley

[pursuant to his reply, 22 November 1984, c. 335]: HMS Conqueror's signals log covering the period of the Falklands campaign was destroyed over the period to February 1983. The destruction is carried out under the authority of the Defence Council.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence when the routine destruction of signal logs of nuclear submarines was introduced in the Royal Navy; and by whose authority.

[pursuant to his reply, 22 November 1984, c. 335]: Available records show that the routine destruction of signals logs has been the practice since at least 1963. The destruction is carried out under the authority of the Defence Council.
