asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many persons have been shot, or otherwise seriously injured, as a result of joy-riding in stolen cars in Northern Ireland this year and in the previous three years.

Statistics are not maintained on joy-riding incidents. Information is however available about incidents in Northern Ireland in which the security forces used force against stolen vehicles which were being driven in a manner which they believed endangered life. The injuries and fatalities sustained by all parties in such incidents are as follows:

These figures do not include casualties which were sustained by those who stole and crashed vehicles or any resulting casualties caused to other road users and pedestrians.
