HC Deb 27 November 1984 vol 68 c460W
27. Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how much has been spent by his Department since 18 November 1983 on publicity to counter discrimination against disabled people amongst the general public; and if he will make a statement.

64. Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he proposes to introduce any legislation to outlaw discrimination against disabled people.

Mr. Newton

The Government have no plans for general anti-discrimination legislation or publicity, but we have already legislated to promote and protect disabled people's interests in the fields of education, telecommunications and transport, and in relation to parts of the social security system. We have also taken initiatives such as the Fit for Work campaign and the establishment of the English access committee. We will continue to take appropriate steps to promote the integration of disabled people; for example my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment will shortly be bringing forward proposals for new building regulations to ensure disabled people's right of access to new public buildings.
