asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will publish the costs of the Transport and Road Research Laboratory for each of the years 1979–80, 1980–81, 1981–82, 1982–83 and 1983–84; and if he will make a statement.

The global in-house costs for TRRI. by financial year for the period 1979–1984 were as follows:

These figures do not include expenditure on research undertaken by other organisations under extra-mural contracts let by the laboratory. They also exclude expenditure relating to property repayment services (introduced with effect from 1.4.83) and central purchases — the 1983–84 level of expenditure for these two headings being £3.2 million.
