§ Mr. Simon Hughesasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his policy concerning the continuation of the higher charge for board and lodging in public sector college hostels and halls of residence imposed on extra-district further education students.
§ Mr. BrookeIt is for the providing authority to secure the home authority's agreement to the payment of the costs of provision. My right hon. Friend agrees with the recommendation of the inter-authority payments committee that for residential students this agreement should cover payment of the residual boarding charge. The decision whether to pay for extra-district further education is at the discretion of the home authority; a student taking up such a place without the permission of his authority will find himself liable to pay the full cost.
