HC Deb 26 November 1984 vol 68 cc370-1W
Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what estimates he has made of the likelihood of any high-explosive bomb or non-nuclear missile penetrating the reactor core of a nuclear power station, in the event of a direct hit; and of what effect this would have in teens of blast, heat or radiation in the surrounding area.

Mr. Goodlad

As explained in my previous reply of 12 November to the hon. Member the general safety requirements for protection of nuclear power stations in the United Kingdom against external hazards are such as to give a considerable degree of protection against weapons. The precise consequences of a direct hit by a high explosive bomb or non-nuclear weapon would depend on the nature of the weapon concerned.
