HC Deb 22 November 1984 vol 68 cc243-4W
17. Mr. Squire

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has national figures for the trend in reported criminal offences since the deployment of police in mining areas.

Mr. Mellor

The diversion of police effort for public order duties arising from the miners' dispute began in the middle of March. The number of notifiable offences recorded in the second quarter of 1984, seasonally adjusted, was about 1½ per cent. higher than in the immediately preceding quarter. This was broadly in line with the general trend.
