HC Deb 21 November 1984 vol 68 c170W
Mrs. Ann Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1) what was, as a percentage figure, the total rise in value of net surplus exports of the chemical industry in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

(2) what was the value at current prices of the net trade balance of chemicals into the United Kingdom in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Fletcher

The available information is as follows:

(2) what was the percentage of total European Economic Community chemical production which has been met by United Kingdom manufacturers in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

Mr. Fletcher

The latest information available from official sources appear in "Structure and Activity of Industry" published by Eurostat, but relates only to 1979. More up-to-date estimates are available from the Chemical Industries Association as follows:

Chemicals production and consumption (NACE 25) United Kingdom as proportion of European Economic Community
Percentage
Production Consumption
1979 16 17
1980 17 16
1981 17 17
1982 17 17
1983 16 17

Note:

Based on data compiled by Chemicals Industry Association from EC national trade associations. The United Kingdom percentages may be slightly understated as the data for the Federal Republic of Germany, Netherlands, Italy and Denmark includes man-made fibres.
