HC Deb 20 November 1984 vol 68 cc124-5W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what additional funding has been made available to the Health Education Council for the prevention of heart disease; what voluntary organisations are involved in the prevention of heart disease; what funding the voluntary organisations receive; and what increase has been made available following the Coma report.

Mr. John Patten

A major programme attacking the problem of cardiovascular disease through concerted local action is being undertaken in Wales by the Health Education Council within resources available (£9.1 million in 1984–85). This is intended as a pilot for future programmes in the rest of the country.

A number of voluntary organisations are concerned directly or indirectly with the prevention of cardiovascular disease and many do not seek funding from the Department. Our current grant of £136,000 to Action on Smoking and Health represents an increase of 12 per cent. over 1983–84. Our grant to the coronary prevention group of £5,000 this year represents a 43 per cent. increase.
