HC Deb 20 November 1984 vol 68 c91W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he is satisfied with the state of the fishing industry in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

The Welsh fishing industry is experiencing a period of adjustment to change following agreement on the common fisheries policy. The industry has been able to benefit from a programme of grants which includes financial support for aquaculture, exploratory voyages, and decommissioning, laying up, modernisation and construction of vessels. In addition, it has access to other schemes providing financial assistance for projects to improve harbour and shore based facilities. The Welsh industry has also been involved directly in advising on the management of quotas which apply to certain fish stocks in its traditional waters in the Irish sea, Bristol channel and south west approaches.
