HC Deb 20 November 1984 vol 68 cc88-9W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what requests have been made to individual owner-occupied farms in the Falkland Islands for leases of land for military training purposes; what is the basis of rent or compensation offered; and what similar requests or arrangements have been entered into with the Falkland Islands Company.

Mr. Stanley

[pursuant to his reply, 15 November 1984, c. 344]: A number of approaches have been made to individual owner-occupiers of farms in the Falkland Islands to rent or lease land for military training purposes such as firing ranges and training areas.

In all cases, the maximum tent offered would be the market rent, reduced as appropriate to take account of the ability of farmers to continue their farming operation during military use of the land. The precise level of rental is of course a matter of negotiation in each case.

The same principles are adopted whether negotiation is with individual owner-occupiers or with larger concerns such as the Falkland Islands Company. Agreement has been reached with the Falkland Islands Company to rent five areas of land for use as firing ranges.
