HC Deb 19 November 1984 vol 68 cc9-10W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will order an inquiry into the running of the Stoke Heath youth custody centre following complaints sent to him by the hon. Member for Liverpool, Riverside;

(2) if he is satisfied with the supervision at the Stoke Heath youth custody centre; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

The hon. Member has written to my right hon. and learned Friend about the health of an inmate at Stoke Heath and we will reply to his letter as soon as we can. If he has any further points to put, we will naturally look into them. But we see no need for an inquiry into the establishment.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the death of the young prisoner in the Stoke Heath youth custody centre, details of which have been sent to him by the hon. Member for Liverpool, Riverside.

Mr. Mellor

Stephen McLachlan died in Stoke Heath youth custody centre during the night of 9–10 July 1984. His death was the subject of an inquest held on 5 September 1984 at Market Drayton. The jury's verdict was that he died of natural causes and that the cause of death was aggravated by self-neglect.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons have received injuries at the Stoke Heath youth custody centre in each of the past five years.
