HC Deb 19 November 1984 vol 68 cc53-4W
Mr. Faulds

asked the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State answering in respect of the Arts, whether he will give the names of all the institutions which will be listed in schedule 1 to the National Gallery and Tate Gallery Act 1954 if the provisions relating to that schedule which appear in the National Heritage (Scotland) Bill are enacted.

Mr. Waldegrave

The following institutions will be listed in schedule 1 to the National Gallery and Tate Gallery Act 1954 if the provisions relating to that schedule which appear in the National Heritage (Scotland) Bill are enacted:

  • The Armouries
  • The British Library
  • The British Museum
  • The British Museum (Natural History)
  • The Imperial War Museum
  • The National Galleries of Scotland
  • The National Library of Scotland
  • The National Library of Wales
  • The National Maritime Museum
  • The National Museum of Wales
  • The National Museums of Scotland
  • The National Portrait Gallery
  • 54
  • The Science Museum
  • The Ulster Museum
  • The Victoria and Albert Museum

The Ulster Museum was added to the original list of institutions in schedule 1 to the 1954 Act by statutory instrument in 1962.

Section 7(2) of the Museum of London Act 1965 removed the London Museum from the list, and specified that sections 3(1) and 5 of the 1954 Act should be construed as if any reference in them to an institution listed in schedule 1 to that Act included a reference to the board of governors of the Museum of London.

The National Heritage Act 1983 added the Armouries, the British Library and the British Museum (Natural History) to the list.

If the provisions relating to schedule 1 to the 1954 Act which appear in part I of schedule 2 to the National Heritage (Scotland) Bill are enacted, "The National Museums of Scotland" shall be substituted for "The National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland" and "The Royal Scottish Museum" shall be deleted.
