HC Deb 19 November 1984 vol 68 cc61-2W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services with which hospitals and other institutions the Mersey regional health authority has contractual arrangements for the care and treatment of (a) mentally ill and (b) mentally handicapped patients; and what is the annual cost.

Mr. John Patten

During 1983, the latest year for which information is available centrally, Mersey regional health authority had contractual arrangements with the following two institutions outside the National Health Service for the care and treatment of mentally handicapped patients:

  • Brothers of Charity, Thingwall Hall, Residential Training Centre, Broadgreen, Liverpool
  • St. Joseph's Children's Hospital, Freshfield, Forratly, Liverpool.

No mentally ill patients were treated under contractual arrangements in Mersey regional health authority during 1983. We do not collect centrally information on the annual cost to the NHS of these services.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many (a) mentally ill and (b) mentally handicapped patients from the Oxford regional health authority area are currently in private psychiatric institutions under contractual arrangement with the regional health authority; and what is the annual cost of such arrangements.

Mr. John Patten

On 31 December 1983, the latest date for which provisional information is available centrally, there were 31 beds occupied by patients in the specialty of mental illness and two beds occupied by patients in the specialty of mental handicap under contractual arrangements with institutions outside the National Health Service in Oxford regional health authority. We do not collect centrally information on the annual cost to the NHS of these arrangements.
