HC Deb 19 November 1984 vol 68 c68W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will ensure that the practice of kidney bartering does not take place in the National Health Service; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

If by "kidney bartering" the hon. Member means the payment of a person to donate one of his kidneys for transplantation, I can assure him that we are totally opposed to such a practice. It has been condemned by the Transplantation Society, and is contrary to a Council of Europe resolution to which this country is signatory.
