HC Deb 19 November 1984 vol 68 cc30-1W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many young first-time home buyers have taken up the options available under the Government's home loan scheme (a) in the United Kingdom, (b) in England, (c) in Wales and (d) in Cardiff for the years since 1978; and if he will make a statement.

Sir George Young

We estimate that 18,000 people have benefited from interest-free loans and savings bonuses under the scheme since 1980 when the first benefits became available. I regret that figures for the take-up of the scheme are not available other than for the United Kingdom as a whole.

Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will consider increasing sums available under the home loan scheme to attract more young people to the scheme; and if he will make a statement.

Sir George Young

My right hon. Friends increased the house price limits for the homeloan scheme applying in England, Wales and Scotland in August of this year, but we have no plans at present to increase the benefits available under the scheme.
