HC Deb 19 November 1984 vol 68 c57W
Mr. David Young

asked the Prime Minister which airline she proposes to name as the United Kingdom national carrier to the Falkland Islands; what factors she took into account in reaching her decision; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

The new airport in the Falkland Islands is not yet in operation. I understand that Virgin Atlantic Airways submitted an application to the Civil Aviation Authority for a licence to operate services, but has not followed it up. No other airline has expressed interest in providing a scheduled service, but British Airways is negotiating with the Ministry of Defence a contract to carry service personnel between this country and the Falklands.
