Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many countries there are with which the United Kingdom does not have an extradition treaty.

Mr. Mellor

There are 77 countries with which the United Kingdom does not have an extradition treaty or any corresponding arrangement under the Fugitive Offenders Act 1967.

Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to conclude extradition treaties with countries with which there is presently no treaty.

Mr. Mellor

We are currently holding discussions with a view to concluding an extradition treaty with Spain.

Mr. Terlezki

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many individuals sought by the police are known to be resident in countries with which the United Kingdom has no extradition treaty.

Mr. Mellor

The information requested is not held centrally and could not be obtained without disproportionate cost.
