asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is the expected total of energy consumption in the United Kingdom in 1984; what was the total consumed in 1983; and what was the estimated total cost of energy consumption in 1983.

Provisional figures for total energy consumption, on a primary fuel input basis, in the first nine months of 1984 was 223.8 million tonnes coal equivalent, compared with 227.2 million tonnes in the same period in 1983, a fall of 1.5 per cent. Consumption in 1983 as a whole was 312.9 million tonnes coal equivalent.

Total expenditure on energy by final users in 1983 is estimated to have been £34,980 million. Figures are not readily available for periods shorter than calendar years.
