HC Deb 15 November 1984 vol 67 cc352-3W
Mr. Gould

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish correct figures for imports of starter batteries from Japan and Taiwan for 1984; if he will explain how the errors arose; and if he is satisfied that these imports are now being properly recorded.

Mr. Hayhoe

Yes, the necessary corrections will be incorporated in the cumulative figures published in subsequent issues of theUnited Kingdom Overseas Trade Statistics and in the more detailed statistics obtainable from the Customs and Excise statistical office. The errors arose from a number of incorrect declarations by importers or their agents in which imported starter batteries were wrongly classified. After discussion with the trade association concerned, Customs and Excise statistical office is making arrangements which should help to ensure the future accuracy of the figures.
