HC Deb 15 November 1984 vol 67 c335W
Mr. Spence

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether the priorities of his recent circular 11/84 dealing with signposting of local tourist facilities in rural areas represents a change of his policy with regard to the introduction of such signs.

Mrs. Chalker

No. Department of the Environment circular 11/84 gives advice on the planning considerations governing the erection off highway land of signs advertising nearby tourist attractions. On grounds of safety, highway authorities do not normally allow such commercial advertisements within the highway boundary. Directional signs to tourist attractions must either be prescribed in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1981 or specially authorised by the Secretary of State for Transport. We have already prescribed some signs for tourist attractions and are experimenting with different designs in Kent and Nottinghamshire.
