HC Deb 15 November 1984 vol 67 c343W
70. Mr. Mikardo

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will report to the House the conclusions of the investigations into the incidents whereby mines were laid in international waterways in the Red sea; whether the retrieval of one mine by British minesweepers has revealed its origin and those responsible for its laying; and what protests he has made.

71. Mr. Robert C. Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what has been revealed from the mine retrieved from the Red sea by a British minesweeper; and what protest has been made to those responsible.

Mr. Stanley

The mine recovered by the Royal Navy from Egyptian territorial waters in the Gulf of Suez was of Soviet manufacture, but we do not know who was responsible for laying it. It has therefore not been possible for any protests to be made.
