HC Deb 15 November 1984 vol 67 c308W
Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many Libyan students are enrolled in British universities and polytechnics at the present time ; and who sponsors them.

Mr. Brooke

In 1983–84, the latest year for which information is available, 402 students domiciled in Libya attended full-time and sandwich courses in universities in Great Britain. The comparable figure for polytechnics was 75.

I understand that no Libyan students have, in recent years, benefited from any of the various scholarship and award schemes by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Overseas Development Administration or the British Council. One Libyan student holds an award under the overseas research student awards scheme.
