asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he has received the report of the board of inquiry investigating the missing log of HMS Conqueror; and if he will make a statement.

No. On the question of a statement, I refer the hon. Gentleman to my answer to him of 13 November.

Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will institute court martial proceedings against the captain or any other crew member of HMS Conqueror, following the loss of the navigator's log book; and if he will make a statement.

I cannot prejudge the outcome of the board of inquiry. On the question of a statement, I refer the hon. Gentleman to my answer of 13 November, at column 228, to the hon. Member for Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley (Mr. Foulkes).

asked the Secretary of State for Defence from what date the new navigator's log book of HMS Conqueror has been kept.

Mr. Heseltine

The control room log of a submarine is kept continuously. As my noble Friend the Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces said in another place on 7 November, the period covered by the missing sections of the log is April to September 1982.
