HC Deb 15 November 1984 vol 67 cc346-7W
Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Defence (1) how many residents from each of (a) the southern part of Cyprus and (b) the northern part of Cyprus now work at the United Kingdom sovereign base of Dekhelia in Cyprus;

(2) how many Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots are now employed at the United Kingdom sovereign base in Dekhelia, Cyprus.

Mr. Butler

There are 880 Greek Cypriots and 337 Turkish Cypriots currently employed at the eastern sovereign base area, Dekhelia. Apart from a small number who live in the United Nations buffer zone, all the Turkish Cypriots reside in the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus—with the exception of three who are resident in the base itself—and all the Greek Cypriots reside either in the Republic of Cyprus south of the buffer zone or in the base.

Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots are employed at the United Kingdom sovereign base in Akrotiri, Cyprus.

Mr. Butler

There are currently 1,980 Greek Cypriots and no Turkish Cypriots at the western sovereign base area, Akrotiri.
