Mr. Wheeler

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many civil servants are employed in Her Majesty's Customs and Excise grades; what is the total inclusive cost of their employment; and if he will provide similar information for each of the previous five years.

At 1 October 1984 Her Majesty's Customs and Excise employed a total of 25,570 staff. I am not sure what my hon. Friend has in mind in his request for the total inclusive cost of their employment, but the following table provides information for each of the last five years with costs based on (1) total staff remuneration and employers' national insurance contributions and superannuation costs and (2) the total cost of Customs and Excise administration including accommodation and other services:
