HC Deb 15 November 1984 vol 67 c321W
21. Mr. Greenway

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the average wage at the latest available date; how this compares in real terms with that of 1975 and 1978; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Rees

According to the Department of Employment's "New Earnings Survey," average gross weekly earnings were £159.3 in April 1984. This figure is for full-time employees on adult rates whose pay was not affected by absence. In real terms, this is an increase of 9 per cent. since April 1975, and of 12½ per cent. since April 1978.
