§ Mr. Neil Hamiltonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many registered traders applied for deregistration for value added tax purposes in each quarter in 1983 and 1984.
Mr. Hayhoe: only the number of actual deregistrations from VAT is centrally recorded. The figures are as follows:
- From 20 October 1983 to 2 February 1983—36,741 deregistrations.
- From 3 February 1983 to 23 May 1983—40,767 deregistrations.
- From 24 May 1983 to 19 July 1983—35,114 deregistrations.
- From 20 July 1983 to 12 October 1983—37,380 deregistrations.
- From 13 October 1983 to 3 January 1984—33,928 deregistrations.
- From 4 January 1984 to 2 April 1984—42,913 deregistrations.
- From 3 April 1984 to 3 July 1984—36,502 deregistrations.
- From 4 July 1984 to 2 October 1984—37,314 deregistrations.
