HC Deb 14 November 1984 vol 67 c254W
43. Mr. Soames

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on Anglo-Soviet relations.

Mr. Rifkind

Our policy is to seek to improve United Kingdom-Soviet relations and to broaden East-West understanding. To this end we are increasing the frequency and variety of our contacts with the Soviet Union.

My right hon. and learned Friend's visit to Moscow in July and the expected return visit of Mr. Gromyko next year are part of this process. The coming visit, at the invitation of the British Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, by a delegation from the Supreme Soviet led by Mr. Gorbachev will also offer a valuable opportunity for an exchange of views at a high level.
