HC Deb 14 November 1984 vol 67 cc259-60W
Mr. Fatchett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in the last six months for which figures are available, how many people have served sentences in Her Majesty's prison Leeds for: (a) non-payment of fines and (b) how many of those serving sentences for non-payment of fines committed offences for which the court was unable to impose a custodial sentence.

Mr. Mellor

According to the records held centrally, about 1,200 persons were initially received into Leeds prison in the first six months of 1984 on committal in default of payment of a fine. The offences of these persons are not recorded in sufficient detail to make it possible to identify those who had been convicted of an offence for which a custodial sentence cannot be imposed.
