HC Deb 14 November 1984 vol 67 c238W
Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many projects the Medical Research Council has labelled approved but not funded in the last year; which projects they are; and what plans there are for their future funding and research.

Mr. Brooke

In the academic year 1983–84 the Medical Research Council approved but was unable to fund 199 applications for project grants — usually of three years' duration—and 22 applications for longer-term support for research programmes. I understand that the projects cover a wide range of biomedical research, but that their details are regarded as confidential as between the council and the applicants. I understand that the council has no plans for a systematic reconsideration of these applications.
