Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what proportion of offenders given life sentences in 1982 and 1983, respectively, had committed homicide offences.

Mr. Mellor

Two hundred and fifty persons, including young offenders, were given life sentences in 1982 and 169 in 1983; the proportion of these sentences which were for homicide offences was 84 per cent. in 1982 and 82 per cent. in 1983.
