We mourn the assassination of Mrs. Gandhi. She was a great leader of her country, and a true friend of Britain. We utterly condemn the tiny minority of people in this country who have sought to exploit, and even to rejoice at, this despicable act.

We look forward to maintaining our excellent relations with India under her new Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and wish him well in his determined efforts to ensure peace and stability throughout India.
