HC Deb 14 November 1984 vol 67 c240W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Attorney-General at whose instigation the Director of Public Prosecutions investigation into the alleged irregularities in the work of Dr. Clift was undertaken; how long the investigation took; how many cases were considered; which forensic experts helped with the inquiry; what was the result of the inquiry; and if a press statement was released regarding the decision not to take criminal proceedings against Dr. Clift.

The Attorney-General

The Director of Public Prosecutions asked the police to look into alleged irregularities in the work of Dr. Clift after the matter had been referred to him by the Home Office. The investigation lasted from 12 September 1977 to 11 October 1978 and was carried out by an officer from the Devon and Cornwall constabulary. In the course of that investigation 59 cases in which Dr. Clift had been involved were considered. Dr. Margaret Pereira was seconded to help with the police inquiry. The decision of the Director of Public Prosecutions was that the available evidence was not such as to justify any criminal proceedings against Dr. Clift. There was no press release by the Home Office at the time of the Director's decision, but the information was confirmed on request.
