asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the ages, location and length of time held of those 14 to 16-year-old boys on remand in adult penal establishments to the latest available date.

The available information about 15 and 16-year-old boys is given in the following table; no 14-year-old boys were so held on 31 August 1984.

It is normal for young males to be kept apart from adult males.

Such information is not collected centrally. However, my hon. Friend may be interested in a recent article on beach safety which contains some relevant information; it is in issue No. 67 — summer 1984—of "Water Safety Today" which is published by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
