HC Deb 14 November 1984 vol 67 c249W
Mr. Amess

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent assessment his Department has made of events in Afghanistan.

Mr. Renton

Tomorrow in the United Nations General Assembly we and the vast majority of the international community will again condemn the Soviet military presence in Afghanistan. The situation within that tragic country is grim. Afghan civilians continue to be subject to indiscriminate and savage attacks. But strong and spontaneous resistance to the Soviet military occupation continues throughout the country, and shows no sign of succumbing to brute force.
