HC Deb 13 November 1984 vol 67 cc159-60W
Q85. Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Prime Minister if she will make a statement about food aid to Ethiopia.

The Prime Minister

Food aid has been promised by many different countries, most recently and generously by the United States which is giving 130,000 tonnes. We expect to ship the 6,500 tonnes we have promised to arrive by mid-December, making 26,500 tonnes provided in all over the last year. The European Community has allotted over 117,000 tonnes of cereals to Ethiopia over the same period, as well as other products. On 6 November the Council of Ministers endorsed proposals for a further 100,000 tonnes to drought-stricken countries in Africa, including Ethiopia. Our Community partners have also individually committed more than another 30,000 tonnes in response to the drought.
