HC Deb 13 November 1984 vol 67 c203W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the Government will now give consideration to the introduction of advertising to fund the British Broadcasting Corporation; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Giles Shaw

Under the terms of the current television licence fee settlement the fees are to remain at their present levels until the end of next March. Discussions are likely to begin with the BBC shortly about the level of fees after that. I do not envisage that those discussions will include the possibility of funding the BBC by advertising.
